By Prof. David H. Tucker. Reported by Thomas L. Hunter, M. D., Resident Physician. 1. Lecture Oh Dropsy, With Cases. Case I. "Ascites." Joe; a negro man; aged 40; admitted Sept. 20th, 18G0. This man has for several years been employed as a hack driver. While acting in that capacity he was accustomed to take large quantities of whiskey, as he said, "to protect him against the weather." Two months ago he was attacked with violent palpitation of the heart and shortness of breath. This lasted for several weeks, when his abdomen began to be distended with an effusion of serum in its cavity. When admitted, his abdomen was very much enlarged. By percussion and fluctuation the presence of a fluid could easily be diagnosed. There was slight hydrothorax, with some anasarcous swelling about the feet. The heart was examined, and valvular obstruction of the left side of the heart was discovered. He was Ordered, R.--Hydrarg. chlor. mit., gr. xx.; pulv. scilloe, gr. xv; pulv. vOl. Xv.--31 digital., gr. xv. M. ft. pill. No. xx. Sig.--One to be taken three times daily. On the 21st, he was no better. The previous treatment was ordered to be continued, and a blister to be placed over the region of the heart. After the blister had drawn, and the pills of calomel, digitalis and squills had been continued for several days, the uneasiness about the heart and all dyspnoea disappeared. On the 27th, his mouth had become a little sore. He then expressed himself as feeling much more comfortable than he had since being taken sick, though the abdomen was very little, if any, softer or smaller than it was ...
